Calling communities – New project launched to investigate Local Food Systems
A new project has been launched to investigate the practicalities that make local food systems work.
Making Local Food Work is looking to work with 4 to 6 communities – both rural and urban – to develop resilient, co-operative activities to improve the longevity and reach of local food in their area. Making Local Food Work is currently welcoming applications from communities based in England who are excited about food, committed to co-operative principles and want to explore economically viable methods for ensuring a strong local food system in their area.
What’s on offer is this:
- runs for 1 year through 2011
- provision of a facilitator to assist with establishing the collaborative food project
- guidance materials
- £5k to spend on non-capital items (ie not bikes, trailers, refridgerated lorries, computers)
- funding to support the cost of meetings involved in setting up the collaboration
Jennifer Smith, Programme Manager for Making Local Food Work, said: “We’ve always been excited about developing individual community food enterprises, for example farmers’ markets, community supported agriculture groups and food coops. The new project is taking this a step further by exploring what happens when these groups actively work together, pooling their resources and enthusiasm.”
